Making Tax Digital Is Coming!

No need to panic, Bodens Bookkeping is here to help you - read on for more insights and information

The adverts are everywhere, accounting software companies selling you the benefits of their systems and how they will help you to ensure you are Making Tax Digital (MTD). But if technology freaks you out and you procrastinate over your business finances normally, quite frankly you are going to be overwhelmed by the whole thought of this UK government initiative that requires businesses and landlords to keep digital records and submit their tax information to HMRC using compatible software quarterly.

What is Making Tax Digital ?

Making Tax Digital, or MTD for short, is an HMRC initiative requiring businesses and landlords to maintain digital records and submit tax updates quarterly using compatible accounting software.

It is replacing the annual requirement to submit a self assessment tax return and is aimed at reducing errors and improving efficiency. The first wave of businesses and landlords to replace their paper records with digital recording of income and expenditure will affect those whose annual income from business or property is over £50,000. From April 2026 it will be mandatory for all who fall in that category to report digitally on a quarterly basis. As well as the quarterly submissions there will also be a final year end return required by 31st January similar to the current self-assessment process. If you are feeling unsure about what it means for you, you’re not alone, it is estimated that 864,000 individuals will be affected by the new MTD system.

From April 2027, those with an income of £30,000 will be subject to MTD reporting and April 2028 will see those earning £20,000 affected.
